On the afternoon of May 20, local time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Prague of the Czech Republic for the 11th summit between Chinese and European Union (EU) leaders. Wen arrived at Ruzyne airport at around 1:15 p.m. (1115 GMT) and was met by Chancellor of the Office of the President of the Czech Republic Jiri Weigl, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Helena Bambasová and other Czech officials. Song Zhe, Head of the Mission of the People's Republic of China to the European Communities, Chinese Ambassador to the Czech Republic Huo Yuzhen, as well as the staff of the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic and representatives of overseas Chinese and Chinese students also greeted Wen and his entourage at the airport. Wen immediately started talks with Czech President Vaclav Klaus, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, and EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to exchange views on China-EU relations and major international and regional issues of common concern. The China-EU summit is the top-level mechanism for political consultations between the two sides. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said earlier that China and the EU will sign several important cooperative documents at the summit. The Chinese side believed that the summit will strengthen mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and push forward China-EU relations, he said. Wen will meet separately with Czech President Klaus and interim Prime Minister Jan Fischer after the China-EU summit. |
